News of revoking freedom fighter status fake : CA’s press wing

The Chief Adviser’s press wing has strongly refuted recent media reports claiming that the status of several prominent figures, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as freedom fighters has been revoked.

In a statement issued by CA’s Press Wing Facts on Wednesday afternoon, the press wing described the news as “completely false, baseless, and misleading.”

The statement referred to news published in several media outlets—including Samakal, Jugantor, Ittefaq, and Kaler Kantho—which claimed that the freedom fighter recognition of over a hundred key figures of the Mujibnagar Government, including President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, and ministers M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman, had been canceled.

Faruk-e-Azam, Adviser to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, clarified that all members of the Mujibnagar Government are officially recognized as freedom fighters.

“Those who led or participated directly in the Liberation War are freedom fighters. Officials and staff of the government at that time are classified as associate freedom fighters under the JAMUKA ordinance,” he said.

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra staff and Bangladeshi diplomats during the war also fall under the ‘associate’ category, which does not reduce their honor or state benefits.

The original definition from 1972 remains in effect, with amendments in 2018 and 2022 reaffirming that both freedom fighters and associate freedom fighters are entitled to equal dignity and privileges, he noted.
