The National Citizen Party has termed the news of seeking 20 constituencies from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the upcoming parliamentary election as well as cabinet portfolios after the polls, completely baseless and ill-motivated.
The widely-discussed report, titled “NCP wants 20 seats from BNP, also seeks cabinet portfolios”, was published in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo on Wednesday.
In a press release issued today, the NCP clarified that it has not made any decision regarding the formation of an alliance, seat, or power-sharing with any political party. Moreover, no such proposal has ever been adopted by the party’s decision-making council.
The party believes that the future of the country’s politics will be based on people’s rights, accountability, reform, and democratic reconstruction, and toward this goal, it is carrying out organisational preparations and candidate screening nationwide.
The NCP remarked that the “source” cited in the Prothom Alo report is entirely speculative and contrary to the basic principles of journalism. According to the party, such reports have misled the public and tarnished its image.
It has called for an immediate apology from the daily and the issuance of a correction for the report.
This latest report by the Prothom Alo came shortly after the NCP announced that it would not field any candidate for the constituencies where BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was nominated for the upcoming national election.
