The Election Commission (EC) has directed that all applications for correction of National Identity Cards (NIDs) be resolved within 45 days.
The instruction was issued to directors of the NID wing and regional election officers at the EC’s recent monthly coordination meeting.
Officials said applications can no longer remain pending indefinitely, regardless of complexity.
In resolving correction requests, Form-2 must be treated as the standard reference document.
Md Saiful Islam, director (operations) of the NID division, said the commission has introduced a strict timeline to expedite services.
“From now on, NID correction applications must be settled within 45 days, with Form-2 prioritised for quick decision-making,” he said.
Currently, applications are processed under six categories.
Cases under Category K-1 are handled by the Assistant Upazila Election Officer, Category K by the Upazila Election Officer, Category Kh-1 by the Additional District Election Officer and Category Kh by the District Election Officer.
The Regional Election Officer resolves category G, while the Director General of the National Identity Registration Division deals with the most complex cases under Category Gh.
The Additional Regional Election Officers are responsible for assigning applications to the appropriate category.
Since 2014 up to 10 September this year, the EC has received 5,729,132 correction applications. Of them, 5,641,491 have been resolved, while 87,641 remain pending.
According to the latest voter list, Bangladesh has 1,26,307,594 registered voters – 64,104,455 men, 62,205,819 women and 1,230 transgender individuals.
