In a sensational case of National ID (NID) fraud in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj, Election Officer Md. Mujibur Rahman and Data Entry Operator Jubair Alam have been arrested. This strict action was taken following a covert investigation that uncovered the fraud network, based on directives from the Election Commission Secretariat.
On Monday (January 27), based on confidential information, Mohammad Takdir Ahmed, Deputy Director (Registration & Expatriate Affairs) of the Election Commission, and Aminul Islam, Assistant Programmer (Information Management), visited the Jagannathpur Upazila Election Office for inspection.
During the inspection, the server’s database was checked, revealing that fraudulent activity had taken place to create multiple National IDs under the names of expatriates Sadikur Rahman, Tanveer Hasan, and Mohammad Liton Ahmed. Voter biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) had been tampered with to facilitate illegal registration.
As there was direct evidence of involvement in the fraud, Jagannathpur Upazila Election Officer Md. Mujibur Rahman and Data Entry Operator Jubair Alam were arrested. In addition to the arrested individuals, cases were filed on Tuesday night (January 28) at the Jagannathpur Police Station under the National Identity Registration Act 2010 and Voter List Act 2009, based on the complaint of the District Election Officer, Sunamganj, against Sadikur Rahman, Tanveer Hasan, and Mohammad Liton Ahmed.
Locals have reported that for a long time, there have been widespread complaints of irregularities and corruption in the creation of National IDs at the local election office. Specifically, a large amount of money was being extorted from expatriate voters. Additionally, through a syndicate, there was a large-scale fraudulent operation involving money laundering and embezzlement.
Confirming the arrests, Officer-in-Charge (O.C.) Ruhul Amin of Jagannathpur Police Station told the Liberty News correspondent that Election Officer Md. Mujibur Rahman and Data Entry Operator Jubair Alam were arrested in connection with the sensational National ID fraud case. The arrested individuals were handed over to the Sunamganj court on Tuesday night under proper police escort.
