At least 124 people have died after the roof of a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, collapsed during a live concert.

A catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo has claimed at least 124 lives, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday (April 9). Rescue operations are becoming increasingly difficult, and officials fear the death toll may rise if survivors trapped under the rubble are not reached soon.

The incident occurred around midnight on Monday during a live performance by renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Hundreds of people had gathered at the venue to enjoy the concert when the roof suddenly caved in, turning the celebration into a tragedy.

Jet Set is one of the most well-known nightclubs in the Dominican capital, frequently hosting music and dance events on Monday evenings. The club is popular among politicians, athletes, and celebrities, many of whom were reportedly present at the concert that night.

Among the deceased is provincial governor and former Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel. The 51-year-old was pulled from the rubble but succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Rescue teams, numbering around 400 personnel, are continuing to sift through the debris in hopes of finding survivors. However, as time passes, officials admit the chances of survival are diminishing.

Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), expressed hope that more survivors remain trapped under the debris and could be saved if rescued in time.

Meanwhile, 155 injured victims have been rescued and admitted to hospitals. The government has issued special instructions to ensure they receive the best possible medical care.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that families of the victims have gathered outside the site, desperate for news of their loved ones. Many are sharing photos and details with police in a frantic attempt to locate missing relatives. The entire nation remains in mourning as the scale of the tragedy unfolds.
