For the first time in years, the traditional “Two Bengals Unity” event will not be held at the Benapole border on International Mother Language Day, due to political tensions and international relations.

The annual tradition of an impromptu Shaheed Minar being constructed at the Benapole checkpost on International Mother Language Day will not take place this year. In previous years, language enthusiasts from both Bangladesh and India would gather at the site to pay homage, making it a symbol of cultural unity between the two nations.

Sharsa Upazila BNP General Secretary, Nuruzzaman Liton, explained that the current political turmoil and strained relations between the two countries had led to the cancellation of the event. He expressed hope that once the political situation improves, the event will resume next year.

Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Lieutenant Colonel Saifullah Siddique, Commander of the 49th Border Guard Battalion, also confirmed that due to a lack of local administrative arrangements in Benapole, the traditional “Two Bengals Unity” event would not be held this year.
