The Ministry of Food has clarified that there were no irregularities, overpricing, or special privileges involved in the import of wheat from the United States.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the ministry referred to a recent newspaper report titled “Bangladesh buying US wheat at higher prices due to contract obligations,” calling the information presented about the government-to-government (G2G) wheat import process misleading.

According to the ministry, the report could create a false impression among readers, and therefore it was necessary to present the accurate facts.

The statement explained that under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the governments of Bangladesh and the United States, wheat is being imported through the G2G arrangement. In the first phase, 220,000 metric tons of wheat were contracted at US$302.75 per ton, and in the second phase, the same quantity was contracted at US$308 per ton.

The ministry pointed out that comparing the U.S. wheat price with Russian wheat prices is incorrect and misleading. The price of U.S. wheat includes transportation costs to Chattogram and Mongla silos, insurance, unloading, and port-related expenses, while Russian wheat prices only cover costs up to the Russian port.

In reality, the current global market price of Russian wheat is about US$230 per metric ton, while U.S. wheat is around US$232 per ton, showing only a US$2 difference.

Moreover, the ministry noted that U.S. wheat is of higher quality, containing an average of 13.5% protein, compared to 11% in Russian wheat, making it nutritionally and technically superior. Considering quality, higher protein content, and international transport costs, the slightly higher price of U.S. wheat is reasonable and market-consistent.

The Ministry of Food emphasized that the entire G2G import process from the United States was conducted in a transparent, competitive, and government-approved manner following international standards.
