The interim government on Monday rejected claims of a sharp rise in crime across Bangladesh this year, stating that official data shows relative stability in major crime categories.
Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder cited statistics from the Police Headquarters, saying, “The data reveals stabilisation in major crime categories over the past 10 months, not a significant surge as suggested in some media reports.”
He acknowledged that recent reports have created fear and insecurity among the public, but clarified that the overall situation does not reflect a nationwide crime wave. “Only a few categories of crime have seen an increase,” he added.
Azad emphasized that citizens should remain cautious but also have confidence in law enforcement agencies, which he said are maintaining control.
Two data tables, covering the last five years and the last ten months, were shared with the media to support the government’s statement. All statistics were sourced from the Police Headquarters.
