Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, has said that efforts are underway to ensure that future autocrats do not survive long in power, emphasizing that the people of Bangladesh should not have to wait 16 years to bring down authoritarian rule again.

“We are working so that no one has to wait 16 years to bring down a dictatorship. I hope that if anyone tries to become an autocrat in the future, the people will bring about their downfall immediately,” said Dr Yunus.

He made these remarks while inaugurating a month-long programme marking the anniversary of the July Mass Uprising on Tuesday.

The event was broadcast live from the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon on Bangladesh Television (BTV) at 11:00 AM.

Dr Yunus added, “When people take to the streets, no power can stop them.”

The remarks come amid nationwide commemorations of the uprising that played a key role in ending past autocratic regimes and restoring democratic processes in Bangladesh.
