Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has warned that no new godfathers will be allowed to be created in Bangladesh.

He issued the warning at a rally near the public library premises in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday. The rally was arranged as part of the ‘July March to Build the Nation’ campaign of the NCP.

Nahid said that during the previous government, Cox’s Bazar became a sanctuary for terrorism and drugs. Just as there were godfathers in Narayanganj, there were also godfathers in Cox’s Bazar, he added.

The NCP convener said, “Under Sheikh Hasina, godfathers ruled the country. We have put an end to the rule of the godfathers along with her regime.”

Regarding the tourism industry, he said that in the name of tourism, the Awami League has only carried out looting and eviction in Cox’s Bazar.

“We want an environmentally friendly tourism system to be developed where the rights and interests of the local people of Cox’s Bazar will be protected,” he said.

Over the Rohingya crisis, the NCP leader said that the Rohingya issue has been a major problem for Bangladesh. “From a humanitarian perspective, we sympathize with them. However, leaving them in Bangladesh for years without rights is not a solution.”

Hasnat Abdullah, NCP’s chief organizer of the southern region, and Tasnim Jara, a central leader of the party, were also present at the rally.
