BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the constitutional amendments must be made through the parliament. There is no scope to amend the constitution outside of parliament.
He made these remarks on Saturday at a memorial meeting held at the ICMAB Auditorium in Nilkhet, Dhaka. The meeting was organized to mark the fifth death anniversary of BNP Vice Chairman, the late Abdul Mannan.
Delivering the keynote address, Amir Khasru said, “Discussions are still ongoing regarding constitutional amendments. If any amendment is to be made, it has to be done from within the parliament. For that, every party must seek a mandate from the people. If any change is to be brought transparently and democratically, it must go through the parliamentary process. There is no alternative route outside parliament.”
He further added, “Those who are trying to obstruct Bangladesh’s future democratic process, trying to hinder elections, do not believe in democracy. They do not believe in the parliamentary system either. They themselves are uncertain about which system they want to follow.”
Amir Khasru emphasized the need for a change in the country’s political culture.
He said, “No matter how many reforms we undertake, it will be futile if we cannot change the political culture. We must learn to respect differing opinions and be tolerant. Only through this can we collectively move the country forward in unity.”
On the issue of national unity, he remarked, “Where unity is needed for the sake of Bangladesh’s national interests, we must remain united. Some are saying that the unity among political parties after August 5 has now disintegrated. But I don’t see any disunity. Every party will have its own philosophy and viewpoints. Where we can agree, we will, and the rest must be taken to the people.”
