A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered Apurba Paul, 23, a student of North South University (NSU) to be sent to jail in a case filed over the charge of hurting religious sentiments through a Facebook post.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman passed the order after police produced the accused before the court, seeking his detention.
Meanwhile, the NSU authority permanently expelled Apura, who was a student of the Media and Journalism Department, from the university following the incident. The university authority also plans to file a case against Apurba, said in a press release issued by the director of the public relations office, Syed Mansur Hasim.
Earlier on Sunday, Apurba was arrested in the Vatara Police station area after a video went viral on social media showing him disrespecting the holy Quran. Police filed a case on the same morning in this regard.
The detention plea of police stated that there is evidence and testimony indicating the accused was involved in the desecration of the Quran.
During interrogation, Apurba Pal admitted that he had insulted the religious beliefs of Muslims by throwing the holy book Quran from someone’s hand to the floor and trampling it underfoot.
Earlier, on the night of 4 October, several videos went viral on the social media platform Facebook, where Apurba Pal was seen of desecrating the Quran. The accused, Apurba Pal, himself reportedly posted the video from his own Facebook account.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh in a statement threatened that the accused must be brought to book quickly so that no one else dares to do such a thing.
In a written statement, the party secretary general said “It seems that there is some evil intent behind this. Some quarters, with the intention of destabilizing the country, could be instigating such a dirty act.”
He also urged the government to investigate into the matter to find out whether there is any conspiracy behind this. “And if there is, it should also be brought under the law.”
