A group of students demanding auto-pass allegedly assaulted the Vice-Chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr. A S M Amanullah, at the university’s main gate on Wednesday afternoon, sparking outrage across the academic community.
The incident took place when the Vice-Chancellor arrived at the administrative building gate. According to university sources, as he stepped out of his vehicle, a group of undergraduate (Pass course) students from the 2022 batch surrounded him, pressing for automatic promotion. Among them, a few infiltrators with alleged malicious intent launched an attack, leaving the Vice-Chancellor with minor injuries.
Officials revealed that the same batch had previously staged several disruptive demonstrations demanding auto-pass. However, the university maintained a firm stance against the demand and went ahead with scheduled examinations. As a result, 69% of the examinees passed.
NU’s Acting Director of Public Relations, Mostafizur Rahman, stated that considering the COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest, the university had already awarded grace marks to the affected students. Additionally, they were offered the opportunity for answer script re-evaluation, with results expected later this month.
“Despite these concessions, a section of failed students, allegedly provoked by external influences, carried out this disgraceful assault on the Vice-Chancellor,” said Mostafizur, adding that the incident has caused serious concern among university officials.
The National University authorities strongly condemned the attack and reiterated that no batch would be granted auto-pass under any circumstances. The university is working to identify the perpetrators and is preparing to file a case with the local Gacha police station.
