Renowned filmmaker and Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has termed the arrest of actress Nusrat Faria “embarrassing” and urged the authorities to handle blanket cases with greater sensitivity.
Posting from his verified Facebook account on Monday, Farooki broke his silence over the arrest of Dhallywood star Nusrat Faria, who was sent to jail in connection with a case filed under Vatara Police Station.
“I usually try not to comment on matters outside my ministry. But I am also a part of this industry and will return to it soon,” Farooki wrote.
Regarding the arrest, he said, “Nusrat Faria’s detention is embarrassing for us. The government’s priority should be to identify and bring the real culprits of the July incident to justice. Blanket arrests should be avoided unless preliminary investigations confirm involvement. This principle had been followed—until now.”
Farooki expressed concern over the sudden nature of the arrest, which occurred at the airport as Faria was about to leave for Thailand. “To my knowledge, there was no prior move to arrest her before the investigation was complete,” he added.
He linked the incident to recent public anger surrounding the former President Abdul Hamid’s travel issues, suggesting that “over-nervousness” might be behind such incidents. Farooki also referenced a similar situation involving the wife of Barrister Andaleeve Partho.
“These incidents are unacceptable,” he wrote, while expressing hope that Faria would receive proper legal redress. “We must remember that our main task is to ensure justice for the real offenders of the July unrest.”
Faria was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday. On Monday, a Dhaka court denied her bail and ordered her into custody, citing her position as the 207th accused among 283 listed in the case.
