For the first time in three decades, New York City recorded five consecutive days without any gun violence, as reported by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Between January 19 and January 23, New York City experienced an unprecedented period of five consecutive days without any shooting incidents. This marks the longest such streak in the city’s history in over 30 years. According to the NYPD, no one was injured or killed in shootings during this period.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tish credited the achievement to the ongoing efforts of the NYPD, saying that it was the longest period without gun violence since the advent of the CompStat era in the 1990s, a time known for modern crime management and surveillance techniques.
Mayor Eric Adams also noted that since taking office in 2022, the NYPD has seized 20,000 illegal firearms, contributing to the decline in crime. Additionally, the increased police presence throughout the city, coupled with the crackdown on cross-border criminals by ICE officers, has led to a reduction in violence.
Ershad Siddique, President of the Bangladeshi American Police Association, further emphasized that the collaboration between law enforcement and community leaders, along with Adams’ efforts to combat crime, has been instrumental in making the city safer.
However, on the night of January 23, just minutes after the NYPD’s announcement, a 34-year-old man was shot in East Brooklyn at 10:15 PM and later taken to Brookdale Hospital. Siddique also pointed out that by January 28, 29 shootings had been recorded in 2025, compared to 39 by the same time last year.
Liberty News’ international correspondent reports that despite some isolated incidents, Siddique urged that such occurrences should not overshadow the NYPD’s overall efforts to ensure safety in a city that sees 8 million daily subway passengers. He also clarified that the NYPD does not arrest individuals based on immigration status.
