Veteran actor Omar Sani has strongly criticized his sister-in-law, actress Sadika Parvin Popy, for her recent remarks blaming the film industry for her personal downfall, calling her statements “emotional and disrespectful.”
After years of absence from the silver screen and public life, National Film Award-winning actress Sadika Parvin Popy resurfaced in February, revealing that she has long been married and is now the mother of a son. Her return was brief, driven by personal disputes with relatives over land, she claimed. Popy further announced her retirement from acting, stating that “cinema has brought her shame,” and expressed her desire to live a quiet life with her husband and child.
Popy’s comment, however, has sparked controversy. In a recent interview, actor Omar Sani, who is married to Popy’s sister, did not hold back. “She shouldn’t have said such things. I’ll call her stupid for that remark. As her brother-in-law, I have the right to correct her,” said Sani.
He further stated, “Who would even know her if she hadn’t been a film actress? Is she the daughter of a billionaire that she can afford to belittle cinema like this? By making such emotional and irrational comments, she has only disrespected herself.”
Popy had engaged with the media multiple times in February, sharing details of her personal life, but has since disappeared from public view again. Since March, she has remained unreachable. Her sudden withdrawal has reportedly stalled the production of several films, including Bhalobashar Projapoti by Raju Alim and Masuma Tani, and Kathgoray Sarat Chandra directed by Arifur Zaman Arif.
Popy made her acting debut in Amar Ghor Amar Behest, directed by Sohanur Rahman Sohan, although her first released film was Coolie. Over her career, she starred in more than 150 films and won three National Film Awards for her performances in Megher Kole Rodh, Ki Jadu Korila, and Gangajatra.
