A 20-year-old man was killed early today in a crude bomb explosion during a clash between two groups at Mohammadpur’s Geneva Camp in Dhaka.
The victim, Zahid, lived in the camp and worked at a mobile servicing shop in Kalyanpur, according to his brother-in-law, Md Ujjal.
Police said the explosion occurred around 3:30am during a violent confrontation between two groups in the area.
Zahid, who was critically injured in the blast, was first taken to the Trauma Centre and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead around 4:30am.
Inspector Md Farouk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death and said Zahid’s body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Md Atikur Rahman Jewel, duty officer at Mohammadpur Police Station, said they received reports of several crude bomb blasts during the clash.
“A police team was sent to the spot immediately, but by the time they arrived, the situation had calmed. Locals said one person had been injured and taken to a hospital,” he said, adding that an investigation is underway.
Ujjal claimed Zahid was not part of the clash and was caught in the violence by accident. “A crude bomb exploded near his leg, causing critical injuries,” he said.
Police have since deployed additional forces in the area to maintain order and prevent further violence.
