Sarwar Hossain alias Babla, accused in 15 criminal cases, was killed when unidentified assailants rained bullets on the campaign trail of Ershad Ullah, a potential BNP candidate, in Chattogram city on Wednesday evening.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam has confirmed the death.
A rival terrorist group carried out the attack targeting Sarwar, 43, to expand its territorial control, police sources said. Ershad Ullah, and another man named Shanto were also injured in the attack.
Ershad is now out of danger following medical intervention, BNP activists have told reporters.
BNP’s senior leaders have asserted that the deceased terrorist Sarwar had no role in the party, and was only an arbitrary participant in Ershad Ullah’s campaign event on Wednesday. Hundreds of people spontaneously join BNP’s election campaign trails, and the party cannot pre-verify the identities of all of them, leaders have said.
The group of terrorist Sazzad Hossain alias Chhoto Sazzad, now behind bars, launched Wednesday’s attack. Sazzad Ali alias Boro Sazzad allegedly controls the group from abroad. Sarwar was also part of the group, but split from it after 2015. He walked out of prison after the 5 August government changeover.
Earlier on 30 March, the Sazzad group attempted to kill him in a car, but only managed to kill two other passengers, the suspects arrested over the deaths confessed to police.
