Online return filing to be mandatory from next July

Starting from the next fiscal year in July, submitting tax returns online will be made mandatory, announced the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Abdur Rahman Khan.

He made the statement on Sunday (23 February) during the inauguration of the four-year strategic plan for customs modernization and the establishment of an import-export hub at the NBR headquarters.

The NBR Chairman stated that the issues regarding online tax returns will be reviewed and resolved. He added that once these problems are solved, the submission of online returns will become mandatory starting next July. This year, tax returns were made mandatory in the public sector, we received a positive response.

He mentioned that the old business owners are still dominating and leading the market. To bring in new players, import-export processes need to be simplified, which requires automation. We are working to make the system more user-friendly and business-friendly. Tax simplification will be a key focus in the upcoming budget.

During the event, the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Chowdhury Ashik Mahmood, noted that the economy is showing a positive trend. Exports have increased by 13% over the last six months, and container handling rose by 7% in January. He emphasized that to move forward, negative factors must be eliminated.

The event also highlighted that the government has adopted a strategic plan for customs over the next four years to modernize and simplify international trade. This will accelerate revenue generation, create a business-friendly environment.
