The body of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi has been transferred from the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases mortuary to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
The transfer was carried out at around 9:40am on Saturday (20 December) under tight security, with members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police deployed.
Hospital sources said the autopsy would be completed by late morning, after which the body would be washed before being taken to the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza will be held at 2:00pm.
In accordance with his family’s wishes, Hadi will later be laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the University of Dhaka.
The government is observing a day of state mourning on Saturday following Hadi’s death. National flags are being flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, educational establishments, and Bangladeshi missions abroad.
Hadi was critically injured in a shooting in Bijoynagar of Dhaka, on 12 February and was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital. He was later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died while undergoing treatment.
His body arrived in Dhaka on Friday evening aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Singapore.
