The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said at least three people have been confirmed dead and more than a hundred injured after a powerful earthquake struck Dhaka and surrounding districts on Friday. Many of the injured are in critical condition, prompting a nationwide emergency medical response.

The DGHS said urgent medical teams have been activated in hospitals across the country as the scale of casualties continues to climb. Both the Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health are monitoring the situation closely.

Speaking at a briefing on Friday afternoon (21 November), Dr Moinul Ahsan, director of the DGHS Hospital and Clinic Branch, confirmed the latest figures.

According to the DGHS, three people died at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital after being caught in the quake’s impact. One of the victims was Rafiqul Islam, a second-year student of the 52nd batch of the college. His mother and several others suffered severe injuries and are undergoing treatment. Officials warned that the number of injured—already over a hundred—may climb as new reports are verified.

Unofficial data provided in the DGHS release shows that Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital received 10 injured patients, with another 10 admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Gazipur’s Tajuddin Medical College is treating 10 more. Narsingdi District Hospital handled 45 casualties, three of whom had to be rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after their condition deteriorated. Another 10 injured people were admitted to the local 100-bed hospital.

Dr Ahsan said emergency teams remain on high alert and that the government has already moved to reinforce medical supplies nationwide. The Health Ministry is maintaining continuous oversight as hospitals manage the influx of patients.

The DGHS has urged the public to remain calm and follow official instructions, while assuring that the government is making every effort to support families of the dead and ensure urgent treatment for the injured.
