At least 50 people were injured during overnight clashes between students from City University and Daffodil International University in Birulia union of Savar on Monday.
Abdul Ohab, in-charge of Birulia police outpost, said tensions erupted in the evening when a rider on a motorbike owned by a City University student fell on a student from Daffodil University.
Eyewitnesses said the disagreements over “spitting incident” led to scuffles and fistfights. Police intervened and managed to reduce tensions.
But the situation got worse again when City University students beat up a Daffodil University student, said Abdul Ohab.
Later, around 9pm, 40-50 students from City University vandalised the residential building hosting Daffodil University students with brickbats and local weapons.
In response, after midnight, around a thousand Daffodil University students marched towards the City University campus and broke in. They vandalised the administrative building, looting computer equipment and other materials. They also torched and vandalised at least eight vehicles inside the campus.
By morning the situation was under control, said Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, duty officer of Savar Model Police Station.
