A violent storm accompanied by tidal surges has left more than 5,000 homes damaged and thousands homeless in Bhola, as embankments collapsed and coastal areas were battered by wind, rain, and flooding.
The worst-hit regions include the remote island upazilas of Charfesson, Monpura, and Tazumuddin, where strong winds and abnormal tidal flooding caused extensive destruction. Many families have been displaced, losing homes, livestock, and access to vital infrastructure.
In Monpura alone, over 3,400 houses were partially damaged, according to UNO Likhon Banik. Kalatali union suffered heavy flooding due to the absence of embankments. Livestock losses are also significant, with many animals swept away.
Charfesson’s UNO Rasna Sharmin Mithu reported total destruction of over 100 homes and the loss of 700-800 cattle. Relief has begun, including the distribution of 500 food packets.
Lalmonhan upazila’s areas—such as Lord Hardinge, Ramganj, Dholigonagar, and Charbhuta—saw damage to more than 500 homes and structures. In Bhola Sadar’s Rajapur union, fish stocks in many ponds were wiped out due to tidal overflow.
According to the Water Development Board, tidal surges from the Meghna River breached embankments in Syedabad (Lalmonhan) and Chandpur (Tazumuddin), causing flooding in two villages. While repair work has been completed in Lalmonhan, restoration continues in Tazumuddin.
Bhola Deputy Commissioner Md. Azad Zahan confirmed that 5,200 houses were damaged overall, with 204 destroyed. The worst losses were seen in Charfesson’s Dhalchar, Char Patila, and Kukri Mukri. Authorities have begun food relief efforts and are preparing a list of affected families for further support.
