Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a stern warning, stating any Indian attempt to build infrastructure on the Indus River will be seen as aggression and met with forceful retaliation.

Amid rising tensions following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif declared that any move by India to construct dams or structures on the Indus River would be considered a direct threat to Pakistan’s national security.

Speaking on Geo News’ program “Naya Pakistan,” Asif said, “If India tries to build any structure on the Indus River, we will demolish it. This is a matter of national security.” He added that blocking water or depriving a population of basic needs like food and water also constitutes a form of warfare.

India has blamed Pakistan for the recent Kashmir attack but has yet to present concrete evidence. In response, both nations have taken reciprocal diplomatic and military steps. India has unilaterally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, revoked Pakistani visas, and closed the Wagah-Attari border. Pakistan retaliated by expelling Indian diplomats, canceling visas for Indian citizens except Sikh pilgrims, and escalating its diplomatic posture.

Accusing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of staging political theatrics ahead of national elections, Asif said India had failed to secure the international community’s support or present credible proof against Pakistan.

While denying any immediate military confrontation, Asif emphasized that Pakistan would pursue the matter through diplomatic and legal avenues, grounding its position on the Indus Waters Treaty and seeking the involvement of global stakeholders.

He concluded with a strong message: “Violating this treaty won’t be easy for India, and Pakistan will employ all strategic options to counter it.”
