Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described Pakistan’s recent military offensive against India as a long-awaited retaliation for the 1971 war, warning New Delhi of severe consequences if further escalations occur.

In a fiery address to troops at the Pasrur military base near the border on Wednesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proclaimed that the recent cross-border attack on India was a “revenge for 1971.” He praised the armed forces, stating, “You have avenged 1971… the entire nation stands with you now,” according to a report by Dawn.

The remarks came following India’s retaliatory strike inside Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. In response, Pakistan launched a counter-offensive named Bunyan-ul-Marsus, which Shehbaz claimed targeted 26 Indian military installations, airbases, and combat aircraft. Pakistan also asserted that several Rafale fighter jets were shot down during the operation.

Issuing a stern warning, the Prime Minister said, “If India strikes again, it will lose everything. We are ready for war, but we are also open to peaceful dialogue — the choice is India’s.”

Shehbaz also emphasized water issues as a national red line, stating that had the Neelum–Jhelum project been destroyed, Pakistan would have responded by targeting major Indian dams, including Baglihar.

Despite the warlike tone, the Pakistani leader extended an olive branch by inviting India to the negotiation table over Kashmir and water disputes. “Let us extinguish the fire and sit down for talks,” he said.

Shehbaz added that he has spoken with the UN Secretary-General, urging the United Nations to take an active role in ensuring peace in South Asia.
