Former ICT Minister Junayed Ahmed Palak has been placed on four-day remand in the Obaidul Islam murder case, with additional arrests of former ministers Kamrul Islam, Atikul Islam, and Kamal Ahmed Majumdar in separate cases.

On Monday, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court issued a four-day remand order for former ICT Minister Junayed Ahmed Palak in the murder case of auto-rickshaw driver Obaidul Islam, who was killed during last July’s public uprising. In addition, the court granted requests for the arrest of Palak in two other cases related to incidents in the capital’s Jatrabari area.

The court also accepted arrest petitions for former Minister Kamrul Islam, former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atikul Islam, former Minister Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, and former Minister Kafrul Islam in separate cases filed at the Kafrul and Gulshan police stations. The accused individuals were brought before the court where the arrest and remand decisions were made.

The prosecution, led by Dhaka City’s Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq, argued for the remand, while Palak’s lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, filed a bail request, seeking cancellation of the remand. After hearing the arguments, the court granted Palak a four-day remand.

Liberty News’ court correspondent states that the Obaidul Islam murder case, which has sparked significant public attention, alleges that the victim was shot during a student-led protest against social inequality on August 5 of last year near the Kajla flyover in Jatrabari. Obaidul was taken to Mitford Hospital where he was declared dead. His wife, Mariam, filed the case at Jatrabari Police Station on September 8, 2023.
