A pedestrian was killed on Sunday afternoon after a bearing pad from the Dhaka Metro rail line fell on him in the Farmgate area, prompting authorities to suspend metro operations temporarily.

According to police, the accident occurred around 12:30pm near the Krishibid Institute under the Farmgate Metro Station. Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain said the man was walking along the footpath when the heavy rubber pad fell from the overhead structure, killing him instantly.

“The pedestrian died on the spot after the bearing pad struck his head,” OC Hossain confirmed, adding that the victim’s identity had not yet been determined.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Nazrul Islam of Tejgaon Police Station said police immediately informed metro authorities of the incident. “Train operations have been halted for safety checks and further investigation,” he said.

The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination, and legal proceedings are underway, he added.

Eyewitnesses said that in addition to the fatality, a nearby tea stall on the footpath was also damaged by the falling component.

This is not the first reported safety issue involving the metro line infrastructure. On 18 September, one of four springs detached from a viaduct segment between Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani.

Bearing pads are specialised rubber components placed at the junctions between piers and viaducts to absorb vibration and distribute load. Authorities have yet to comment on whether the latest incident indicates a wider safety concern in the metro’s construction or maintenance system.

The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is expected to issue a detailed statement after a preliminary investigation.
