People Tasted Freedom Through Ziaur Rahman: Mughdha’s Father

Staff Correspondent: Mir Mostafizur Rahman, father of Mir Mughdha who sacrificed his life in ‘July Movement 2024’ stated that, it was through President Ziaur Rahman that the people of Bangladesh experienced the taste of independence. However, he lamented that this freedom did not last long. “The independence we achieved in 1971 was lost in 1975 with the im০position of BAKSAL. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who destroyed democracy through BAKSAL, can never be the Father of the Nation. His daughter, Sheikh Hasina, became the monstrous face of autocracy.”

He made these remarks on Friday morning while addressing the commemorative program and prayer event titled “July Remains Undying in Our Memories”, marking the first anniversary of the July Uprising and Martyrdom Day of Mughdha. The program was held at the auditorium of Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology (ADUST) in Diabari, Dhaka.
The event was chaired by ADUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam.

During the program, ADUST Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman Shamsul Alam Liton announced that the university would establish a bottled (mineral) water plant in the name of Mughdha, and the water produced would be distributed free of cost.

Calling for liberation from “Delhi’s dominance,” also said, “We must work on this at every level. Those who, in the name of reform during the 1/11 era, brought the country under Delhi’s control—liberate July from those fascists. Return July to the hands of the July warriors.”

Reflecting on Mughdha’s sacrifice, Liton said, “Mughdha gave the entire nation oxygen through the movement. He sacrificed his life to free the country’s 180 million people from the slavery of autocracy. Under orders from the government, the police and army fired indiscriminately to suppress the democratic movement—but Mughdha and his comrades stood as a shield for the people.”

Accusing the Awami League of committing crimes against humanity, the ADUST chairman stated, “More than 50 student activists of the July movement have been killed across the country at the hands of this party.”

He called for setting up speedy trial tribunals in at least 64 districts, including 10 in Dhaka, to ensure swift justice for the murderers and collaborators involved in killing July movement activists. “Had this been done earlier, the Gopalganj incident might have been avoided,” he remarked, urging July warriors to raise their voices.

Former State Minister for Education and ADUST SDI Director Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon added, “The Gopalganj incident proves that fascism has not yet been eradicated from the country. Everyone must remain vigilant against fascism.”

As part of the day-long July anniversary observance, various speakers recalled the sacrifices of the July martyrs. The program included a photo and video exhibition, candle lighting ceremony, and graffiti art by EDUST students.

Other speakers included ADUST BoT member Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Haque Chowdhury, Member-Secretary Md. Kamruzzaman Litu, Trustee Kamrun Nehar, Chief Academic Advisor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Shahidul Islam, researcher and teacher AKM Zakir Hossain, Joint Convener of Global Bangladesh Alliance for Human Rights, Sharmin Akhter, Convener July Anniversary Celebration Committee and Chairman Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Majid Istiaq Ahmed, Chairman, Robotics & Automation Engineering, Md. Zubayer Ahmed, Coordinator, Journalism & Media Studies department and Member-Secretary of July Anniversary Celebration Committee, Mahbub Hasan Akand (Central Committee Member, Private University National Association of Bangladesh – PUNAB, and ADUST student Abdul Halim and Marzan Ahmed Utshab.
