BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said for the first time in many years, the people of Bangladesh are getting the opportunity to cast their votes freely and in a festive atmosphere.
“This time, it will be the people themselves who will ensure a fair election,” he said. “The people will guard the ballot. In this process, the role of law enforcement agencies will be secondary — the voters’ role will be central.”
He made these remarks on Monday evening while speaking at a roundtable discussion titled “An Inclusive and Fair National Election: Citizens’ Expectations from Political Parties.”
Leaders from various political parties, including Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, nayeb-e-ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, also attended the discussion.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that political parties and citizens are the primary stakeholders in any election.
“The Election Commission merely conducts the polls, law enforcement agencies maintain order, and the government carries out its routine duties,” he said. He emphasised that all parties are committed to ensuring a free, fair, and internationally acceptable election, and the BNP will play its full part toward that goal.
Referring to BNP’s political commitment, Salahuddin said, “Our pledge has been that once fascism is defeated, the parties that fought against it will, upon winning the election, form a national government based on consensus. Through this, the BNP’s 31-point reform agenda will be implemented.”
He added that several commissions — such as those on constitutional, judicial, media, and administrative reforms — have already been mentioned in BNP’s agenda.
Some interim commissions have been formed by the caretaker government, but the reforms proposed so far are not sufficient.
“If BNP is entrusted with responsibility, we will reconstitute these commissions as promised,” Salahuddin said. “Comprehensive reforms must be carried out to fulfill the aspirations of the people.”
