The United States has reaffirmed that the future of Bangladesh must be determined by its people, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes amid ongoing challenges in the country.
During a regular press briefing on Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce responded to a question about recent developments in Bangladesh, stating that “the people of Bangladesh will determine the future of their country.”
Bruce noted that Bangladesh is an important nation facing unique challenges, a matter the US has addressed on multiple occasions. She also referred to the arrest warrant reportedly issued by a Bangladeshi court against British MP Tulip Siddiq, emphasizing that such legal matters fall under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh’s authorities.
“Democracy is important,” Bruce added, underscoring that the actions of citizens will ultimately shape how Bangladesh navigates its problems. She acknowledged the difficulty of the country’s current path and highlighted the need for informed decisions.
“Elections matter. I don’t want to minimize that, but it is a reality,” Bruce said. “Over the past two decades, we’ve seen how poor decisions can devastate people’s lives. Now, many countries, including Bangladesh, stand at a crossroads.”
The US State Department’s statement comes amid ongoing political tensions and concerns over democratic processes in Bangladesh.
