A Bangladesh Biman flight carrying 71 passengers, including children, faced a mid-air emergency after one of its rear wheels detached shortly after takeoff from Cox’s Bazar on Friday afternoon.
Flight BG 436, operated by a Dash 8-400 aircraft, departed Cox’s Bazar International Airport at 1:20 PM en route to Dhaka. Moments after liftoff, the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure when one of its rear wheels detached and fell to the ground, prompting the pilot to request an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Upon receiving the alert, Dhaka’s air traffic control initiated emergency protocols. Fire and rescue teams were stationed on standby along the runway as precautionary measures.
According to A.B.M. Roushan Kabir, General Manager (Public Relations) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, “The wheel fell off just after takeoff. Our engineering team is prepared at the Dhaka airport. The aircraft has been declared in emergency status.”
Despite the alarming situation, aviation experts assured that the aircraft is capable of executing a safe landing with a missing rear wheel. “Even with one rear wheel, the plane can land safely,” Biman’s technical team confirmed.
Airport sources reported that the aircraft is currently circling the skies over Dhaka, preparing for its emergency landing. Authorities expect it to land shortly under full emergency protocol.
