A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, as well as 27 others, over alleged corruption in the allocation of plots under the RAJUK Purbachal housing project.
In a significant legal development, the Senior Special Judge’s Court in Dhaka, presided over by Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, on Tuesday issued arrest warrants against 29 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her ICT advisor and son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The charges stem from alleged abuse of power and irregularities in the allotment of government plots in the Purbachal New Town Project.
The court has set April 28 as the date for submitting the arrest execution report.
The other accused include senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, including Administrative Officer Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar, Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Goldar, Additional Secretary Kazi Wasi Uddin, and Secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker. Several current and former RAJUK officials have also been named, such as former Chairman’s PA Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, Director Md. Kamrul Islam, and others involved in land and estate management.
According to Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, this is the latest in a series of anti-corruption actions targeting high-profile individuals. Earlier this month, the court had already issued warrants in related cases against Hasina, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and 51 others including her sister Sheikh Rehana and family members over similar allegations.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleges that Sheikh Hasina abused her power as Prime Minister to secure a diplomatic zone plot for herself in Sector 27 of the Purbachal project, despite owning multiple residential properties in Dhaka—facts allegedly concealed in her official declaration. The charges claim that Hasina used her office to influence officials and bypass legal procedures to unlawfully obtain the plot.
Liberty News’ court correspondent states that in a separate case, 17 people, including Hasina and Joy, have been charged with similar misuse of power, making this one of the most high-profile corruption cases in the country’s recent history.
