General Secretary of the Jagannath University (JnU) Teachers’ Association Prof Dr Rais Uddin alleged that police are trying to distort the investigation by presenting a fabricated love triangle narrative, which is an attempt to divert the probe in a different direction.

He made the remarks at a press conference at the university regarding the overall progress of the investigation into the murder of Jagannath University student Md Jobayed Hossain.

During the press conference, he said, “Many questions still remain unanswered. Jobayed was killed with a single stab—could Mahir, who is shorter than Jobayed, have done that, or was a professional killer hired?”

Raising questions about the case, he said, “Barsha, who allegedly instigated the incident, gave a statement saying she tracked Jobayed’s location and informed her boyfriend. That should have been treated as the first lead, but why was it not included in the FIR?”

Raising another concern, Prof Rais Uddin said, “We saw in the CCTV footage two individuals wearing black and red T-shirts running and fleeing. Are they the same duo who was arrested? If so, have their clothes been seized as evidence? We need all these answers.”

Demanding that the real killers be brought to justice, he said, “The authorities of the university will appoint a lawyer to oversee the case proceedings. We want to ensure that no one escapes justice due to legal loopholes.”

Meanwhile, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Estiyak Hossain Zipu, told the Daily Sun that there are some missing details in the FIR. “The information about how Barsha plotted the scene should have been included there. However, we are waiting for the autopsy report, and the charge sheet will follow,” he added.

On 20 October, Jobayed Hossain, a post-graduate student at Jagannath University and a member of the convening committee of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was stabbed to death on the staircase of a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area, where he had gone to give tuition.

Jobayed’s brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed the case with Bangshal Police Station on 21 October morning accusing Jobayed’s student Barjis Shabnam Barsha, her boyfriend Md Mahir Rahman, 19, Fardeen Ahmed Aylan, 20, and four to five unidentified individuals.

On that day, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in a press conference, claimed that Barsha and Mahir orchestrated the murder on 25 September.

Mahir, Aylan and another accomplice executed the killing following Barsha’s plan, who was previously in a relationship with Mahir but later became involved with Jobayed, unbeknownst to Mahir at first. When Mahir discovered the affair, the couple allegedly decided to eliminate Jobayed.
