Police have stated that no political affiliations have been confirmed against any suspects arrested over the brutal murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand alias Sohag in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, Old Dhaka, despite Jubo Dal expelling two leaders over alleged involvement.

Deputy Commissioner of Lalbagh Division Jasim Uddin said at a press briefing on 12 July that the investigation focuses on identifying the culprits and the motive behind the crime. “Political identity is not our primary concern; we prioritize involvement in the murder,” he added.

Jasim noted that although various sources have linked suspects to political parties, the police have found no credible evidence to support these claims. The arrestees have not disclosed any clear political connections.

Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal expelled two members — Rajjab Ali Pintu and Sabah Karim Lucky — citing their alleged role in the killing. The organization stated it will not take responsibility for their crimes.

Responding to the expulsion, Jasim said the Jubo Dal’s actions are internal decisions and should be clarified by the organization itself. He assured the police investigation remains apolitical and fact-based.

The murder occurred on 9 July around 5:40-6:00 pm at Gate No 3 of Mitford Hospital. Police responded immediately, arresting two suspects at the scene. The dispute reportedly stemmed from a business conflict over ownership of a local scrap shop between the victim and attackers.

Sohag’s sister filed a case on 10 July, and police have so far arrested five individuals using CCTV footage as evidence.
