The police conducted a raid on the residence of former education minister of the ousted Awami League government, Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, at Chashmahill in the port city on Wednesday.
Seven youths present at the house were detained during the raid.
Sources said the law enforcers carried out the drive following reports that a group of people was planning a scheme linked to Thursday’s lockdown programme announced by the Awami League and its associated organisations.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Solaiman said that upon receiving information that several Awami League members gathered at Nowfel’s house to hold a secret meeting regarding the lockdown, the police conducted an immediate raid in the afternoon.
Though no family member of the former minister, son of late former Chattogram City Corporation mayor and AL leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, was present, seven individuals were found inside the residence and taken into custody for interrogation, said the OC.
The detainees claimed to be employees of a restaurant owned by Nowfel’s younger brother, Borhanul Hasan Chowdhury Salehin.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies across the country have remained on high alert ahead of the Awami League’s planned lockdown programme announced for Thursday.
A Dhaka court is set to announce on Thursday the date for delivering its verdict in the case filed over crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising involving three individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Following the event, the Awami League, whose activities have been banned by the interim government, has announced a “Dhaka Lockdown” programme, raising fears of unrest across the capital.
