Police have recovered around 50,000 cubic feet of looted ‘Sada Pathor’ in fresh drives in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet, raising the total recovery to nearly half a million cubic feet since the large-scale stone plundering that recently sparked nationwide criticism.
The drives were carried out from Monday evening till 11pm, Companiganj Police OC Uzair Al Mahmud Adnan confirmed. He said that operations will continue to recover the stolen stones and bring those involved in the illegal extraction under the law.
So far, 11 people have been arrested in cases filed by the Department of Mines and Minerals.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, police conducted operations in several areas of Sylhet Sadar upazila, including Tilapara, Rangitila, Kandipara, and Salia villages. Around 5,100 cubic feet of stones were recovered from hidden spots in paddy fields, house yards, and roadsides.
Following widespread criticism over the stone looting, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sher Mahbub Murad was removed from his post on Monday. Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Azizunnahar was also transferred.
Meanwhile, the government has appointed former RAB magistrate Sarwar Alam, known for his firm stance against irregularities, as the new Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet.
