A deepfake video falsely portraying Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam using a still image and AI-generated voice has been circulating on social media, prompting legal action.
In a statement issued Tuesday (August 5), the Police Headquarters confirmed that the video used advanced voice cloning technology alongside a photo of the IGP to spread misleading information.
Authorities warned that such digital fabrications are punishable offenses under current Bangladeshi law. Efforts are already underway to identify and prosecute those behind the incident.
The Police Headquarters stressed the need for responsible digital behavior and warned that any attempt to spread misinformation or tarnish the reputation of public officials will face strict legal consequences.
