Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant (Retd) General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced on Friday (14 June) that regular police units will no longer be equipped with lethal or heavy weapons, though standard rifles will remain in use.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) offices, he clarified that “deadly weapons” refer to large firearms, not smaller arms like rifles or knives, which can also be fatal.
The adviser explained that different police units are structured for specific roles, and their equipment needs vary accordingly. “If we ever face war, the APBn will be on the front lines alongside the army. That’s why their weapons are different,” he noted, adding that naval and industrial police also require specialised equipment.
Reflecting on recent law and order conditions, the adviser said there were no major incidents during Eid, indicating improved security nationwide. He acknowledged a few petty crimes but stressed that no serious events were reported.
Commenting on a recent incident in which a man dressed in a RAB-like uniform allegedly robbed Tk1 crore in Uttara, he said such individuals—whether real officers or impersonators—would not be spared.
He also addressed ongoing efforts to reduce traffic congestion, acknowledging the challenge but affirming that the government is doing its best to manage the situation.
Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam and RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman were present during the visit.
