A woman was allegedly gang-raped and her husband brutally assaulted in Bhola’s Tajumuddin upazila after he refused to pay extortion money. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, led to a case being filed on Monday against 11 individuals, including local political leaders.

The accused include Farid Uddin, joint secretary of the upazila unit of the labour wing of a political party, and Md. Russell, convener of the student wing at Tajumuddin Government College. Another accused, Alauddin, who claims to be affiliated with the local youth wing, was also named in the case.

According to the victim’s husband, who filed the case, he had ongoing personal disputes with his second wife. On Saturday night, she asked him to meet her in Tajumuddin Bazar. Upon arrival, he was reportedly ambushed by Farid, Russell, Alauddin, and several others, who demanded Tk 4 lakh in extortion. When he refused, he was tortured throughout the night.

The next day, his first wife arrived and handed Tk 10,000 to the assailants, but they were dissatisfied and escalated their abuse.

According to the victim, around noon on Sunday, her husband was forcefully taken outside while Farid and Alauddin raped her in a room. She alleged that her husband’s second wife stood guard outside during the incident. Despite pleading for mercy and calling the perpetrators “brother,” she was not spared.

The couple was released later in the afternoon under the condition they would not report the incident. Upon returning home, the woman attempted to take her own life twice but was stopped by her relatives.

With the help of neighbours, the couple contacted the national emergency number 999, after which police from Tajumuddin Police Station arrived and rescued the woman.

Officer-in-Charge Mohabbat Khan confirmed the filing of the case and said that steps are being taken for the victim’s medical examination. Bhola Superintendent of Police Shariful Haque said that strict action will be taken against the accused if the allegations are proven.

Meanwhile, student leader Russell denied involvement, stating, “I only came to know about the matter through Facebook.”

Local BNP leader Omar Asad Rintu said if anyone from the party’s affiliated organisations is found guilty, strict organizational action will be taken.
