Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that if elections are arranged before the trial of the perpetrators of mass killings during the July uprising and reforms in state institutions it will result in a crisis.
He said this while speaking at a commemoration ceremony on July uprising arranged by the United Nations Human Rights Council in the capital on Tuesday.
He said, “Trial, reforms, and elections have to go in a parallel manner and if there is any deviation, they might again cause a national crisis.”
He said that the martyrs’ families refuse to accept elections without any visible justice, like at least some of those who committed atrocities held accountable in an open court.
Regarding justice, Shafiqur stressed that accountability must be transparent and fair, with no impunity for perpetrators. Jamaat pledges full cooperation in the process, aiming to eradicate the culture of impunity and ensure appropriate punishment for the killers.
He also emphasised that regardless of whether Jamaat is in power or be the opposition in future parliaments, their role will remain “clear, just and fearless.”
He declared that they “fear none but Allah,” and remain accountable to their conscience and the nation. He expects the same commitment from other parties. Whoever forms the next government must safeguard the trust of the people—so no one can accuse them of betrayal.
