Polytechnic students lift Satrasta blockade

Liberty News Desk

Students of diploma engineering courses withdrew from the Satrasta Intersection in the capital around 2pm, almost three hours after enforcing a blockade on the crucial road link to press home their four-point demand.

It was not immediately clear whether the blockades across several other districts were also being lifted.

While lifting the blockade in Tejgaon, the protesters announced the next day’s demonstration plans. The diploma engineering students would hold sit-in programmes in front of all the polytechnic institutes as well as crucial communication points across the country on Thursday, said protest coordinator Mashfiq Islam Dewan.

Earlier, the blockade was enforced around 11am on Wednesday.

As part of coordinated efforts, diploma engineering students also blocked roads in Dinajpur, Gazipur, Tangail, Kushtia and Cumilla, calling for the implementation of the same demands.

The Dinajpur-Dhaka railway was also blocked in Dinajpur.

The blockades have caused huge sufferings for general people in the affected areas, and add to tensions with university students, who have placed counter demands.

The four demands of polytechnic students are: government measures to immediately and permanently halt all activities related to the three-point demand of BSc engineering students, full implementation of the six demands of diploma engineering students, maximum punishment for the threat to life issued by university students against diploma engineering counterparts, and introduction of “one-channel education system.”

Earlier, students from BUET and other public as well as private engineering universities demonstrated with their three-point demand.

The BSc engineering students have called for reserving the 9th grade engineering post in public service only for four-year bachelor degree holders, removing the quotas for diploma degree holders in 10th grade engineering posts, and legal measures against those who use the “diploma engineer” title without securing bachelor’s degrees.

Diploma engineering students have opposed all the three demands presented by the university students, presenting separate six demands of their own.
