Electricity production at Dinajpur’s Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant has come to a complete standstill due to mechanical failures, shutting down all three of its units.

The plant’s Chief Engineer, Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed the shutdown on Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant has a total generation capacity of 525 megawatts (MW) across its three units. The first and second units have a combined capacity of 250 MW, while the third unit can generate 275 MW.

The second unit has been non-operational for an extended period due to technical malfunctions, leaving only the first and third units in operation, which collectively supplied around 230 MW to the national grid. However, on February 15, the third unit was shut down due to mechanical issues, and on Tuesday afternoon, the first unit was also taken offline following a boiler leakage.

Chief Engineer Abu Bakkar stated, “We had to shut down the first unit after detecting a boiler leakage on Tuesday afternoon. We hope to restore operations within a week.”

Liberty News’ local correspondent states that with the entire plant offline, concerns rise over the impact on power supply and grid stability in the region.
