Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Prof Mia Golam Porwar has called for the inclusion of the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the national referendum, saying that the July Charter must be given a legal basis through public consent.
Speaking as the chief guest at a rally in front of the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Friday afternoon, Porwar said, “A referendum must be held to give the July Charter legal legitimacy, and the PR system must be included in it. The people’s opinion cannot be ignored.”
He further stated, “If the nation votes in favor of PR, all political parties must accept that verdict. And if the people reject it, we too will respect that decision.”
Rejecting claims that ordinary citizens do not understand the PR system, Porwar said that the majority of Bangladeshis support adopting proportional representation in elections.
The Jamaat leader also alleged that efforts were being made repeatedly to obstruct the trials of what he termed “the collaborators of fascism.”
He claimed that under pressure from a particular political group, officials favoured by them were being appointed to key administrative positions, which was undermining the level playing field needed for a fair election.
“If a level playing field is not ensured,” he warned, “the country will once again face a controversial election.”
Porwar also criticised a political party for showing reluctance to cooperate in ongoing electoral reforms.
“Some are demanding quick elections but are unwilling to help with necessary reforms,” he said. “They say the country is bigger than the party, but their actions do not reflect that.”
