A pregnant woman was sexually assaulted by a group of men in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Saturday night. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the assault.
The arrested suspects, Mohammad Ashraful and Deep Sorkar, both rickshaw pullers, were apprehended by the police. According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam of South Keraniganj Police Station, the woman had come to Dhaka a few days ago following a dispute with her husband. She was looking for work and had taken shelter at a shrine.
On the night of the incident, three rickshaw drivers allegedly offered the woman food and shelter, only to later take her to a room where they sexually assaulted her. A case has been filed, and police are actively investigating the matter.
Two of the suspects have been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend the third. The victim, who is four months pregnant, has been sent for a medical examination at the One-Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Dhaka Medical College.
Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that police sources revealed that the woman belongs to a Hindu family and had married a Muslim man without informing her family. After a conflict with her husband, she sought refuge at her parental home but was reportedly expelled. She later traveled to Dhaka in search of work.
