Escape of Abrar Fahad’s killer : Prison authorities explain

The prison authorities have provided clarification regarding the escape of a death-row convict involved in the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad. The convict, Munthasir Al Jemi, escaped from the high-security prison in August 2024.

In response to news about the escape of a death-row convict involved in the 2019 murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad, the prison authorities have issued an explanation. The incident took place in August 2024, when Munthasir Al Jemi, one of the convicted murderers, escaped from the high-security central prison in Gazipur along with 202 other prisoners, including 87 death-row convicts. The authorities stated that Jemi, aged 26, hailing from Kalia village in Netrakona, broke out after the prison walls were breached.

The prison authorities issued a statement signed by the Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Development) on Monday night, aiming to dispel confusion among the public. The statement detailed that the escape led to the filing of a case under section 4(8)24 of the Penal Code at Konabari police station on August 15, 2024. Since then, with the combined efforts of law enforcement agencies, 51 escapees, including 35 death-row convicts, have been recaptured and returned to prison. The authorities confirmed that efforts to apprehend the remaining escapees are ongoing.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that that as for the murder case of Abrar Fahad, it was noted that 22 convicts involved in the case were imprisoned, with 21 currently still in custody. The authorities reassured the public that all efforts are being made to bring the remaining fugitive to justice.
