Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said his interim government is committed to holding a free, fair, and credible national election to ensure a smooth transition to democracy.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the ‘Nikkei Forum: 30th Future of Asia’ in Tokyo on Thursday, Prof Yunus said the nation is undergoing a historic transformation following a student-led mass uprising last year that brought his government to power.
“We see this as an opportunity to right past wrongs, build new institutions, and realise the vision of a more just society,” he said, adding that they are working hard to uphold justice, equality, freedom, and the dignity of the people.
Prof Yunus highlighted that, despite internal challenges, Bangladesh continues to contribute to global peace through active participation in UN peacekeeping operations and by sheltering over a million Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar, purely on humanitarian grounds.
On Wednesday, Prof Yunus also informed former Japanese Prime Minister and Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League President Taro Aso that the next general election in Bangladesh will be held within a six-month timeframe—between December and June next year.
“The Chief Adviser assured that the election will be conducted within this period,” said his Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
Prof Yunus’s visit to Japan includes high-level bilateral discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries, while reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to democratic values and global responsibilities.
