Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced “significant progress” in indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States, recently held in Muscat under Omani mediation.
Speaking to Iranian state television on Sunday, Araghchi described the talks as having moved “beyond mere words,” noting that both sides witnessed “real progress in mutual understanding.” The discussions, mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, signal a potential thaw in long-standing tensions, with another round of talks expected next week.
Despite the progress, Araghchi firmly stated that Iran’s uranium enrichment activities remain off the table in the negotiations. “That issue is not open for discussion,” he emphasized.
The Muscat meeting marked the fourth round of indirect dialogue between Washington and Tehran. Lasting nearly three hours, analysts say it was one of the most “contentious and complex” rounds yet. The US reportedly demanded the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear facilities—an expectation Iran has consistently rejected.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes and operates within the framework of international non-proliferation agreements. However, skepticism persists in Washington. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff recently insisted that dismantling Iran’s uranium enrichment centers is “absolutely essential” for any agreement.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning, stating that if diplomacy fails, “military options remain on the table.”
