The special train arranged for attendees of the July Declaration reading ceremony departed from Rajshahi Railway Station Tuesday morning with nearly an hour’s delay due to a protest by passengers dissatisfied with the train’s condition.
Around 7:15 AM, a group of protesters gathered on Platform 1’s railway tracks at Rajshahi Station, voicing complaints about the special train designated for the event. By 7:30 AM, they had blocked the Silk City Express, which was also scheduled to depart.
Originally set to leave at 7:20 AM, the special train finally departed at 8:13 AM. The Silk City Express, due to leave at 7:40 AM, was delayed until 8:25 AM. The special train is expected to pick up students from multiple stations on its route to Dhaka, including Pabna-Ishwardi, Tangail, and Sirajganj.
Protesters argued that the special train resembled a local train with cramped seating, seating five to six passengers per seat, and would not guarantee timely arrival in Dhaka. Dissatisfied with the facilities, they protested by blocking the Silk City Express.
The demonstration eventually split into two groups—one boarded the special train and departed for Dhaka, while the other boarded the Silk City Express.
Rabi student Shubho Ahmed explained, “The train provided was like a local one, very uncomfortable, and unlikely to reach Dhaka on time. That’s why we protested to demand a better train.”
Rajshahi Station Manager Shahidul Islam said, “We informed higher authorities about the complaints. The trains assigned meet quality standards, so this appears to be a misunderstanding.”
