Protesters cut off Barishal highway to demand hospital reforms

Barishal Correspondent: For the third consecutive day, protesters in Barishal have blocked roads demanding the dismantling of “syndicates” in the healthcare sector and urgent reforms.

At around 11:30 AM on Saturday, demonstrators blocked the Dhaka–Barishal highway in the Nathullabad area, cutting off road communication between Barishal and six surrounding districts.

Protesters alleged that due to long-standing syndicates in government hospitals, ordinary people have been deprived of proper medical care. They said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has yet to take any initiative for a solution or dialogue. They also warned that the blockade would continue unless immediate action is taken.

Students from Barishal University, Government Brojomohun College, Government Hatem Ali College, Barishal Polytechnic Institute, along with local residents and content creators, joined the demonstration.

This protest is part of a broader movement that has been ongoing for 13 consecutive days, demanding an end to corruption and mismanagement in the healthcare sector, including at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and others across the country.
