Protesters storm Bangabandhu’s historic residence in Dhanmondi 32

Enraged student demonstrators stormed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence at Dhanmondi 32 on Wednesday night, breaking through the entrance gate and causing widespread damage.

The protest, which erupted around 8 PM, saw agitated students chanting slogans before pushing their way into the premises. At the time of reporting, the protesters remained inside, with eyewitnesses confirming acts of vandalism within the house.

Law enforcement officials were stationed on Mirpur Road, blocking access to the residence but had not yet intervened inside the premises.

The unrest follows a social media post from the verified Facebook page of the now-banned student organization, Chhatra League. The post, made on Tuesday night, stated that the president of the Awami League, currently in India, would address students on Wednesday night. Following this announcement, multiple social media posts surfaced, calling for a “Bulldozer March” toward Dhanmondi 32 after Sheikh Hasina’s speech.

However, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has not issued any official statement regarding the attack. Notably, the violence occurred before Sheikh Hasina’s anticipated speech could take place.

Adding fuel to the tension, a post from the verified Facebook account of Hasnat Abdullah at 6:25 PM declared, “Tonight, Bangladesh will be freed from the pilgrimage site of fascism.”

This incident comes exactly six months after the collapse of the Awami League government on August 5, following a mass student-led uprising. On that day, Dhanmondi 32 was also targeted, witnessing similar scenes of vandalism and arson.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack, while tensions continue to mount in the capital.
